Medusa war ursprünglich eine betörende Schönheit. Als aber Pallas Athene sie bei einem Techtelmechtel mit Poseidon in ihrem Tempel überraschte, war sie so erzürnt, dass sie die Buhlerin in ein geflügeltes Ungeheuer mit Schlangenhaaren, Schuppenpanzer, glühenden Augen und heraushängender Zunge verwandelte; so sahen auch ihre Schwestern, die Gorgonen aus. Der Anblick ließ jeden Mann zu Stein erstarren.

Originally Medusa was a beguiling beauty. But after Pallas Athene surprised her while she had an affair with Poseidon in her temple, she was so angry that she turned the her into a winged monster with snakes instead of hair, scaly armor, glowing eyes and a tongue hanging out, like the Gorgons. The sight made any man to stone.
